ECUADOR - America Supports Correa - The News, Ten Latin American countries to support the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, who threatened police officers fallen in the protests that developed into the coup.
Across 10 countries, namely Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Cuba and Honduras has given a message of support to Correa. Organization of American States (AOS), also supports Correa.
While Peru has closed the border with Ecuador and President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, said on Caracol TV that he had closed the country's border with Ecuador.
At UN headquarters in New York, a spokesman for Ban Ki-moon said the Secretary-General expressed strong support for Ecuador's democratic institutions and elected governments. Ban also worried about the physical condition of Correa and asked all parties involved to resolve the latest crisis peacefully, within the rule of law.
In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said U.S. officials are closely following the incident. "The United States deplored the violence and lawlessness, and we express our full support for President Rafael Correa, and the institutions of democratic governance in the country," he said. "We urge all citizens of Ecuador to unite and work within the framework of democratic institutions of Ecuador to achieve rapid restoration of order and peace."
Correa was elected president in 2006 and served in 2007. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illiniois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001.
